When You're Ready to Retire
Selecting the right time to retire is an important decision. You should carefully consider several factors, including your pay, service, and age — and how they affect your pension benefit. You must also allow plenty of time to obtain your pension estimate and process your retirement.
Applying for Your Northrop Grumman Retirement Benefit
Once you decide on your retirement date, call the Northrop Grumman Benefits Center (NGBC) at least two months before your retirement date to provide notice of your intent to retire and request your retirement kit. Your pension kit will include an estimate of your pension benefits. Information about retiree medical coverage, if applicable, will be sent separately.
Your benefit payments can begin the first day of any month. For example, if you want to begin your pension benefit payments on January 1, you must call the NGBC by November 1 and return all of the required and completed forms by the date indicated in your kit. Otherwise, the date your pension benefit payments begin will be delayed.
When you call the NGBC, you’ll need to provide required information about yourself and your spouse or other beneficiary, as applicable, to process your retirement.
The date your pension benefit payments begin also depends on when you complete and return all of the required forms included in your retirement kit.
Be sure to check your forms to ensure that all the necessary information has been completed, and return the forms by the date indicated in your kit. If you’re not sure about how to complete any of the required paperwork, do not hesitate to call the NGBC and speak with a benefits service representative. They are there to help you! In addition to calling the NGBC, you must follow your business unit’s retirement process, which may require you to notify your manager and/or local human resources representative.
